Mike, that is called the cylinder stop on a S&W, and has nothing to do with keeping the cylinder in the frame. The stop is pressed in (now milled in) to keep the cylinder off the shield area (I believe). I think what is missing would be toward the front or middle frame, and on a S&W it's the other (right) side.
