It just reduces voltage to the igniter to turn it on. If you have no power when the switch is turned on, start by checking voltage on the white wire at the switch, should be battery voltage.

The bike is a 2001 VN800 Classic and the previous owner said the bike was idling and then while he was strapping his helmet on the bike died. He took it to the place where he bought it and they pulled the plugs, said they put a camera inside and they claim the motor sucked a valve. The bike had not been taken care of by the PO, and some TLC on my part has gotten it running much better/smoother. Disconnect the rectifier from the bike. If I remember correctly there are 5 wires in the plug to the rectifier... 3 white, 1 red, and 1 black. Measure the resistance between all combinations of the white wires. They should all measure about the same, and somewhere near .1 ohms.
